A good game of hockey was played on a miserable February afternoon at Stanley Park. Top of the table Bangor arrived very early and had well over an hour to warm up. Blackpool’s substitute keeper Andy Rouse arrived early to join in the fun and get re-accustomed to putting the pads on again after a 5 year absence.
The game started at a usual high pace given the two sides are used to high quality passing and moving hockey. A goal for Bangor half way through the first half was given even though Pete Latimer was on the floor with his lip split and his stick lying 15 feet away from him. Blackpool rallied and a well worked move saw Dave Morgan get his first of 2005. The defence of Boniface, Latimer, Gettings and Woodman were tested by a well drilled side but stood firm. The midfield of Kieron and Liam Morrow, Rob Pasqualino and Dave Wright worked well and looked good going forward and the irrepressible Andrew Mortimer was a handful all game. Going into half time 2-1 down Blackpool had a real chance of getting a result, but in the second half seemed to take their collective foot off the gas. Woodman was replaced by Jack Boniface and Rob Abbott had to deputise for Latimer as his face began to swell horribly and he could no longer see.
The captain made a grave error of judgment by questioning his own umpires decisions on two occasions and can only hope that the umpire accepted his apology after the game and took the criticism for what it was. Said during the heat of battle with a strong desire to win and get a good result at home.
At the final whistle the score was 2- 6 to the visitors. A little heavy on the Bangor side but they took their chances well and deserve to be top of the table. Thanks must go to Andy Rouse and umpire Steve Bradbury who both put up with a lot more than they deserve.
