A man went to a zoo……. It only had one animal…….. A dog……… It was a Shitzu
Now I know you are now thinking what has a brilliant joke like that got to do with a report about a hockey game? But good games are like good jokes, you never get tired of telling them and talking about them. The mighty Blackpool side is not just a hockey team anymore but a collective of good friends who just happen to meet up every Saturday and run around after a ball. Last Saturday they went to leafy Cheshire to run around on the best pitch in the county, against the best team in the league (that statement is not based on league position). Several people were unavailable but the side has genuine strength in depth as Ash, Mike and my PA (Dom Chadwick) all stepped up for a big game.
Bowden play their hockey like Gaz likes his sex, fast, hard and with lots of dribbling and they had obviously not had much of a Christmas break. Blackpool on the other hand had used the time off to enjoy the finer things in life such as turkey, pies and continental lager. The game, as expected was played with large sections of Bowden possession but Blackpool can take a lot of pride in how well they defended and worked for each other. 3-0 sounds like a drubbing but in fact it was 2-0 at half time after a well worked open play goal and a rather lucky short corner and it took until the 60th minute for Bowden to wrap things up with another well worked penalty corner.
All in all it was a good game with two good hockey teams playing passing hockey on an excellent pitch. It was not a classic but does warrant mention for the spirit in which the game was played. The only downside to the afternoon was the lack of a Blackpool goal and the disgraceful behaviour of Liam Morrow in the changing rooms after the game. Bowden estimate the refurbishment cost of the showers could run into the thousands and the damage to the drain system is extensive.
