Blackpool travelled to Salford on Sunday for the Lancashire Trophy quarter final. After smarting from the previous day’s game, the team knew it would be difficult. From the off, Salford saw as much of the ball as Blackpool and an unlucky deflection saw a penalty flick given to Salford which was converted.
Undeterred, Blackpool continued to press and were soon awarded with a goal from Paul Atherton after a goalmouth scramble. The half continued with both teams pressing hard but failing to convert any chances.
Blackpool retained much of the ball in the second half and continually pushed and were soon rewarded with another goal from Steve Whitley.
All Blackpool had to do was defend well but Salford pushed all men forward and with two minutes to play scored from a tight angle. Facing extra time, Blackpool put almost every man behind the ball but unfortunately Salford were rewarded with a short corner and with the final touch of the ball made it 3-2 and a place in the semi-finals.
