Blackpool started their season back in Division 4, after luckily escaping relegation, with a fresh team raring to go. They started very positively playing high up the pitch and scored first when Jack Boniface managed to deflect a shot from Rob Abbott into the goal. Blackpool extended their lead when Dave Morgan converted a short corner chance midway through the first half. Some poor defending and an unlucky penalty corner brought South Cheshire back level by half time.
Straight after the break Blackpool went 3-2 up, after a cross by Steve Whitley from the edge of the D was unexpectedly left by the goalkeeper, maybe being confused with the strikers around him. South Cheshire continually tried aerial balls up to a lone front man, and although their attacks were usually snuffed out, they started to pile on the pressure in the second half, and with Blackpool’s team tiring and losing their structure they went ahead with three further goals. Blackpool weren’t helped when their striker David Wright was sin-binned for 5 minutes just as they were looking to get back into the game.
Despite the loss, Blackpool felt there were enough good periods of play to be hopeful for the rest of the season. Next week sees then take a long trip up to Carlisle.
Opposition Man of Match – Graeme Kilshaw Players Votes – 1st Pete Latimer, 2nd Dec O’Hara, 3rd Sean Lester [we’re not quite sure why all 4 in the defence were so highly rated after shipping 5 goals, but you can’t argue with democracy!]
