Blackpool knew they were in for a tough game against the already crowned league champions Lancaster University who score an average of five goals every game. However the home team worked hard in the first half, unlucky to conceed the first to a shot with ricoched off the post and behind the diving Graeme Kilshaw in goal.
Blackpool hit back with a counter-attacking goal started by a clearance from Simon Thomas in midfield and ended with a fine strike from Mike Thom. Lancaster went ahead again after a run through midfield pulled the defence away from their marking and left a striker able to shoot without challenge.
Only 2-1 down at half-time, Blackpool still felt they were in the game. Five minutes later they were two more goals down after defensive lapses of concentration and the team fell apart. Lancaster’s superior fitness, stick skills, and finishing meant they scored seven times in the second half and Blackpool had no reply.
Mention must also go to Blackpool’s top scorer Dave Morgan who managed to have a shot on his own goal which Graeme Kilshaw managed to initialy save only for a Lancaster player to score on the rebound. And then he ranted at the team “well that’s what you get when your striker is back here defending”!!!
A poor end to a decent season where Blackpool finish in mid table and completed the double against local rivals Lytham!
