After the Christmas period both teams were looking to shake off the turkey and beer with a win, both needing a win for different reasons. Before the game started the heavens opened and some would think it was going to be one of those days, welcome back to hockey! However, the rain withheld during the game and the rain just helped the surface to be slicker.
The 1st half was tight with both teams seemingly wanting to keep a clean sheet as chances were limited for both sides. Blackpool seemed to be the side wanting to score more as Southport sat back and defended. However Southport were first to strike from a powerful short corner which left Blackpool stunned. As the half drew on both sides gave it their all but the half time whistle went at just the right time for Blackpool.
As the 2nd half started Blackpool looked more determined and up for the game, but Southport would not give in until J. Currey gambled and bagged one back for Blackpool. Blackpool must have thought the odds were good for them to win now and they were right to think that as an emphatic counter attack equalled another goal for M. Hayes. A good comeback for the men in Tangerine but they had to defend strongly with P.Taylor blocking several short corners however he was backed up by P. Atherton, S. Allen and B. Mortimer. Blackpool finally put the game to bed when C. Hocking judged the pace right and slotted home to make it 3-1.
Great result for Blackpool who are now still in contention of promotion.
