Ormskirk Men’s 1sts 3 – 2 Blackpool Men’s 2nds

3 points thrown away in the windy wilds of Ormskirk
Blackpool are back in the relegation positions after squandering a two goal lead, not helped by two ill-disciplined yellow cards, together with Formby’s surprise win against the previously unbeaten league leaders.
Blackpool travelled to Ormskirk with a decent squad, buoyant from their wins just before the Xmas break, and started the stronger of the two teams putting a lot of pressure on Ormskirk’s defence.
However Blackpool struggled to convert their chances, and wasted several short corner attempts before finally after a defensive block came out to Nathan Woodman at the top of the D, he blasted it directly into the goal to open the scoring.
Martin Hayes doubled Blackpool’s lead later in the half, deflecting a Woodman shot. Blackpool were able to go into half-time with a 2-0 lead, after Josh Hughes was able to make a goal-line clearance from an Ormskirk short corner right on the whistle.
It went horribly wrong in the second half. Was it because the on-field captain Mike Sharp was off the pitch with an ankle the size of a grapefruit? Or did panic set in when Ormskirk scored within a minute of the restart? Or were Ormskirk not winning short corners where they didn’t previously? Did Blackpool’s shape and formation fall apart? Or did ill discipline leading to two yellow cards, first for Martin Hayes and later Alex Hughes, contribute (albeit Ormskirk also lost two players in each incident)? Whatever it was, and it was probably a combination of them all, Ormskirk grabbed three goals in the second half and Blackpool’s chances had dried up.
A most disappointing loss to a relegation rival, made worse by Formby’s surprise win. The only remedy is for Blackpool to turn it around and stop Formby extending their four match winning run at Stanley Park next Saturday.
