Blackpool Men bounced back from their first consecutive losses in nearly 4 years with a 4-2 win against Southport firsts at Stanley Park. Before all supporters could make their way down, Blackpool were already two goals to the good. Twice Ian Swaine was provider, firstly to Dave Morgan, and second to Steve Whitley after two rapid counter attacks from the home side.
Southport pulled a goal back with a well hit reverse strike from the edge of the area, but Blackpool pushed ahead and could have been out of sight at half time with the number of missed opportunities. Moments before the break, the visitors could have been level bit for Ben Mortimer’s deflection at a penalty corner on to the post.
The second half brought more of the same. The home crowd switched between frustration and laughter as their team failed to stretch their lead. Eventually, the pressure told as Man of the Match Swaine beat two defenders and hammered home on his reverse to open up a two goal cushion.
At this point the game developed into a card frenzy as both teams spent the remainder of the match with reduced numbers. Ugly challenges and to much back chat brought the downfall of 6 different players during the period. Blackpool pulled further ahead when Morgan tapped in at a corner after Rob Dingle’s layoff, and Southport grabbed a consolation with 5 minutes to play.
