Blackpool’s third team travelled to Preston and were defeated 2-0 despite putting up a creditable fight.
Blackpool knew that despite already having secured a victory earlier in the season over Preston 6th Team, a visit to a high flying Preston 5th Team would be a tougher task. Preston started off with confidence, their front 3 displaying a range of movement that left the Blackpool defence struggling to keep track. However a combination of missed chances, some last ditch tackling from Corey Stott and Steve Pope and some good saves from keeper Toby Jeffrey, kept Blackpool on level terms for long enough to begin to find some attacking threat of their own. Keiffer Walker-Earnshaw and Steve White both narrowly missing the goal with well struck shots.
On 20 minutes Preston broke the deadlock. The ball was played into their striker who, with an exceptional first touch, managed to create enough space for himself to slot home into the bottom corner. This was shortly followed by a second Preston goal, a solo run from midfield and a calm finish past Blackpool’s keeper, leaving the half time score 2-0 to the home side.
In the second half Blackpool showed some good passing through midfield with Ashlie Holmes, Will Turnbull, Kieron Ablett and Will Pickles showing they were more than a match for their more experienced opposite numbers. However Blackpool struggled to break down a well organised Preston defence. At the other end Preston were still counter attacking regularly but Blackpool’s back line managed to keep their goal intact. In the end there were no further goals in the second half leaving the final score 2-0.
Blackpool’s man of the match was Corey Stott.
