Blackpool 2’s promotion hopes are in tatters after they failed to beat relegation fighters Southport 3’s at home, losing 3-2.
Blackpool were buoyed after seeing leaders Formby 3’s beaten by Lytham on the previous day, when Blackpool had no game of their own, and with returning players in Mike Sharp and Adam George were confident at the start.
However Southport seemed a keener outfit and caused Blackpool problems from the off. They went ahead from a hit outside of the D went through the middle and although the Blackpool defence thought they were impeded, play continued and a lone striker had a one on one shot. It wasn’t long before Southport were 2-0 up after a penalty stroke was awarded when the ball hit a Blackpool defender’s foot in front of goal.
Blackpool struggled to gain control, although had some short corners, but none of which came to anything. It was the last play of the half when Alex Diver managed to nudge the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Blackpool had a better second half and it was Diver who scored the equalizer. There then seemed like only one winner with Blackpool making inroads on both flanks with youngsters Ollie Thomlinson and Harrison Stott linking well with the more experienced Rob Pasqualino and Jack Boniface in midfield, who later shared the man of the match award.
With time running out, it was actually Southport who scored a winner from a rare second half short corner, and left Blackpool no time to equalise, nevermind find a much needed winner.
Blackpool drop to 4th in Division 5NN with Blackburn jumping over them, and now need the other 3 teams above them to drop points, although the one slim hope is that Blackpool are still to play all 3 so wins against them all will be imperative and could make a difference.
