Blackpool Mens First Team’s season came to a tame end with a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Southport first team.
With little to play for in their final fixture, Blackpool were noticeably off the boil, with a lack of conviction in their play in all areas of the pitch. Southport quickly raced into a two goal lead after defensive errors and goalkeeping mistakes from the visitors.
Blackpool finally got into the game midway through the first half, but buoyed by their impressive start, the home side looked the more confident on the ball and the more dangerous on the break. Blackpool did little to help themselves with a number of wasted opportunities in front of goal and limped into half time still unable to get past the Southport goalkeeper.
The second half didn’t provide a change in fortunes. A deflected penalty corner saw Southport stretch their lead to three, and allowed them to sit back for the remainder of the game with Blackpool posing little threat. Jordan Payne pulled a consolation goal back for Blackpool with five minutes remaining, in a passing move that left many scratching their heads of why couldn’t this have been done an hour ago?! The result leaves Blackpool with their highest ever finish in North West Hockey, finishing 6th in Division 1.
