Blackpool 3’s took a hard beating by Kirkby Lonsdale, losing 6-2 in their final game before the Christmas break.
Blackpool had only the minimum 11 players, including two up and coming juniors, of which George Walker was making his debut to join his elder brother Chris. Whereas Kirkby had a more experienced line-up, full of running who competed for every ball.
It felt like Kirkby were camped out in Blackpool’s half for most of the first half and were soon 2-0 up. Blackpool gradually gained some momentum with Joe Neath and Matt Atherton linking well in midfield and going on some runs, but there were no clear cut chances.
Blackpool were stronger in the second half , however they were caught out by counter attacks, defensive errors and clinical finishing by Kirkby and before they knew it they were 6-0 down.
Blackpool never gave up, and did eventually win some short corners and finally Matt Atherton spun and put one away. Minutes later Joe Neath dispossessed a Kirkby attack, found Jacob Lyons in space on the right wing, who then passed to Matt Atherton who entered the D and struck a fantastic shot from a tight angle which found the backboard.
Alas there was no time left to claw back another four goals, but at least Blackpool restored some pride, and all part of this season’s learning curve.
