Blackpool had no luck in their home game against fellow relegation strugglers Runcorn.
They went behind early due to a silly defensive error when a communication mix-up between Joe Boniface, Rob Pasqualino and Peter Latimer led to a side-line hit from Boniface being pushed to Pasqualino who hadn’t expected it and Latimer diving in to recover it but not before the Runcorn striker had puched it past him. Boniface & Latimer ran after the striker, only for them to trip over each other and watch as the Runcorn striker made no mistake striking past Nick Rainbow as the last line of defence.
Joe Boniface then limped off, cussing and swearing, with 2nd’s regular Sean Lester coming on as his replacement. Despite Lester playing the best of the defenders for the rest of the game, it meant that there were no spare subs to freshen up the team later in the game when Blackpool were in need of inspiration.
Despite the early goal Blackpool had much of the possession but the Runcorn goalkeeper made numerous saves, many at close range, and even the posts denied Blackpool a goal.
The umpiring was extremely strict and suited Runcorn’s solidly built strikers. However the yellow card for David Wright was without question and it was lucky that the period without him didn’t lead to any goals conceded, as it usually does.
Runcorn scored twice more in the second half, both from short corners, and this defeat leaves Blackpool in real danger of a second successive relegation.
