After their first loss of the season the previous day, Blackpool were determined to bounce back against opponents three divisions lower in the Lancashire Trophy quarter-final.
They got off to a perfect start when Steve Whitley’s strike was latched upon by Ian Swaine within two minutes of the start. However Golborne were no pushovers and counter attacked with speed causing Blackpool’s defence problems. Nick Rainbow kept Blackpool in the lead with some key saves in both halves.
Blackpool seemed to struggle to play as a team until midway through the second half when they started passing and moving. This then lead to a flurry of goals to make the game secure. Dave Morgan scored the second from a short corner, James Slater grabbed the third whilst loitering at the back post.
Blackpool’s fourth goal was a master-class in passing from James Slater to Atish Mistry to Rob Abbott to Steve Whitley to Simon Thomas to finish off. Dave Morgan grabbed the final fifth goal when his strike was deflected by a defender into the goal.
Blackpool now look forward to their semi-final in the new year, and can hopefully go one better than last year’s semi-final defeat to Morecambe.
