Men 1s
Blackpool Men’s 1st team were left ruing their missed chances as they lost out 4-2 to promotion rivals Keswick.
The long drive to Cockermouth didn’t seem to have any effect on Blackpool as they started the game the better side. The free flowing passing seen last week continued and Blackpool found themselves 1-0 up after a series of penalty corners. Ian Swaine’s powerful strike could only be deflected over the diving goalkeeper and the visiting side thoroughly deserved their lead. They should have been at least two up as James Slater tormented the Keswick defence down the right, and several of his crosses shaved the end of Blackpool sticks without being able to be tapped in. Blackpool were made to pay for squandering these chances as Keswick drew level after a well worked move down their right. Blackpool may have missed some glorious chances in open play, but their penalty corner team were on hand to put them back in front. Steve Whitley’s flick from Swaine’s lay off beat the Keswick defenders on the line, and Blackpool were rightly back in front. But with just a few minutes to go before half time, Blackpool failed to clear a ball from their lines and the Keswick striker was on hand to provide the final touch past Nick Rainbow.
The second half began similar to the first, but slowly the crispness in Blackpool’s passing began to deteriorate. Keswick broke away and after an unfortunate slip, they went through on goal with only the keeper to beat, and the striker calmly put the ball past a helpless Rainbow. With Blackpool now being behind for the first time, they began to chase the game, playing right into Keswick’s counter attacking game plan. Under the pressure of needing a goal, even the reliable penalty corner team couldn’t find a way to convert their chances. As full time approached, Blackpool began to tire and sloppy passes invited wave after wave of Keswick attack. Keswick’s fourth came with just over five minutes to go, and killed off any hope Blackpool had of getting back into the game.
Blackpool drop to 5th in 3rd in Division 3.
Men 2s
Blackpool 2s also travelled to Cockermouth to play their unbeaten Keswick counterparts but they were not awed by the opposition. They took the lead after Nathan Woodman received the ball outside the D, dribbled past two and slotted a reverse stick shot into the bottom corner from a tight angle. Woodman then doubled the lead with a drag flick from a short corner.
Straight after half time Blackpool went 3-0 up with a classic move at a short corner with interplay between Woodman and Rob Pasqualino, Woodman taking it on his reverse to get space and slotted into the bottom corner once more. Woodman took his fourth goal with another drag flick flying into the top right corner giving the keeper no chance. Keswick managed to grab one back but it was no conciliation for them losing their unbeaten record and opening up the race for the second promotion place. Blackpool climb a place to 5th in Division 5.
Men 3s
Blackpool 3rds continued their unbeaten run with a 4-1 victory at bottom side Golborne. Captain Alex Diver opened the scoring from a penalty corner before Josh Boyne scored for the second consecutive week. Strong defensive work from Woodman, Pope, Griffin, Baines and Jebson allowed Blackpool to attack with flair, however a lack of concentration allowed the hosts to score before the break. Following good play from Pickles and Smith, Diver latched on to a ball from Harrison Clark to restore a 2 goal lead. Diver completed his hat-trick drag-flicking a penalty corner high into the net, and with it another 3 points for Blackpool and climb the Division 8 table to joint 7th place.
